Singapore 2010 Youth Olympic Games Theme Song

Ken Lim © 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games Organising Committee (SYOGOC)

Walls are down
Hopes arise
Rings of the world unite

Every child
Has a wish
To glow like the stars above

Lift our voices as victories blaze
This is the day to win with grace

Chorus
Raise your hand for our generation
Fly the flags of every nation
Reaching out for that moment in our lives
Raise your hand for our generation
Living out your aspiration
Time to fly way beyond the skies
A world that shines for everyone

Be the best
Go all the way
Friends beyond the race

Cheer the joy
Share the tears
The journey remains our pride

Bridge 2 *
Lift our voices as victories blaze
This is the day the world will shine on for everyone

simple and compound sentences

In the big book, "Is the Wise Owl Wise?", we will be learning about simple and compound sentences.

Simple Sentences
A simple sentence contains a single subject and predicate. It describes only one thing, idea or question, and has only one verb - it contains only an independent (main) clause.

Any independent clause can stand alone as a sentence. It has a subject and a verb and expresses a complete thought.

For example:

•Jill reads.

Compound Sentences
Compound sentences are made up of two or more simple sentences combined using a conjunction such as and, or or but.

For example:

"The sun was setting in the west and the moon was just rising."

Each clause can stand alone as a sentence.

For example:

"The sun was setting in the west. The moon was just rising."

Every clause is like a sentence with a subject and a verb.

For example:

•I walked to the shops, but my husband drove.
•I might watch the film, or I might visit my friends.
•My friend enjoyed the film, but she didn't like the actor.

We will be going through some examples in class tomorrow using the learning sheets.

Here are some games for you to practise at home:

Class Writing: Life cycle of a butterfly

There are many colourful butterflies at the Butterfly Garden. In the beginning, the mother butterfly lays an egg on a leaf. After a few days, the egg cracks. Out comes a tiny caterpillar. It starts to eat the eggshell and the leaves. It becomes bigger and fatter. Then it sticks itself on a branch. It becomes a chrysalis with a hard shell. After some time, the shell breaks. Out comes a butterfly with wet and crumpled wings. Soon, its wings will and the butterfly will flit from flower to flower to suck the nectar with its long tongue.
